ALOM firware upgrade to 1.6.8 V215 servers

journal entry posted by gsgatlin on August 18, 2008 2:22pm

At the request of Sun tech support person Sheilah Bashford
the ALOM firmware on engr06f.eos.ncsu.edu and
engr07f.eos.ncsu.edu were upgraded to version 1.6.8 this afternoon.
It is hoped that this will prevent any further lock ups on the
Service Console. Thus far the Service Console has become unresponsive
twice on engr07f.eos.ncsu.edu and had to be power cycled to bring it back
online.

engr10f back into production

journal entry posted by gsgatlin on June 3, 2008 10:34am

File server engr10f is back into production.
This file server now uses OIT's SMS rather than the Apple Xserve RAID
it was using previously. engr10f has approximately 1TB of space for
AFS volumes in the eos cell. These are divided into 10 100 GB partitions.

Dispatches from Madison, WI

journal entry posted by rfgrau on May 14, 2008 6:50pm

Wednesday began with a panel of analysts discussing 'Rich Media Knowledge Creation and Sharing' aka as the field in which Mediasite competes for business. Nothing particularly revolutionary here, everyone agreed that the field is maturing and there will be a greater need for webcasting solutions like Mediasite in the future.

I continued the technology track presentations today. The first, 'Successes and Challenges of an Enterprise Implementation' was a bit of a let down because it was lacking in technical detail. It was all handled at a very high level, for example, one challenge was your group's IT shop, and the presenter stated that his solution had been to go over their heads. The other presentations made up for it, beginning with Mediasite Security Basics, which covered access permissions granted within the System Manager.

After lunch was an interesting panel discussion on 'Enterprise Rich Media' where several IT folk discussed how they benefited from streaming media. That ran long and was followed by a brief session on Advanced Security, Registration, and Single Sign On. I had no idea Mediasite offered a Registration or SSO module, so I was really glad it was mentioned. Next was a presentation of the central Michigan Lecturion EZ self service program, a .NET application writted to automate the creation and publishing of Mediasite presentations. The program is still in beta, but the setup is very similar to what we have at NCSU. Finally, there was a Server Deployment Model presentation that I wish I had seen six months ago when I was dealing with that exact issue. :) Fortunately, there were extra bits that made the time well spent.

Dispatches from Madison, WI

journal entry posted by rfgrau on May 13, 2008 7:24pm

I just finished with a full day of presentations at the Mediasite Unleash User Conference.

It started with Sonic Foundry CTO Monty Schmidt giving a preview of new features in the upcoming 5.0 release of Mediasite.

I attended the technical track sessions all day long. The morning sessions suffered a little from the schedule, as three presenters tried to fit many hours of presentations into 1 hour and 15 minutes time. Unfortunately, that meant that they were mostly only able to give an overview and couldn't really get into details.

The afternoon sessions were an improvement, as Helder Conde gave interesting tips on making live webcasts more interactive and entertaining, and Shane Tracy of Sonic Foundry went more in depth on Mediasite 5.0 features. Shane was good about fielding a variety of questions from the floor, which were particularly enlightening.

Finally, we met the people who made up the Mediasite Users Group Steering Committee, and the entire list is too long to remember, but the group is chaired by Kelly Parke of York University.
