I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make a vmxnet 2
driver disk for RHEL 5.3. I couldn't get my disk to work.
I spent even more time figuring out how to re-spin a boot.iso CD to have the
proper drivers on it. After much screwing around I have a method that
works with Realm Linux installs and a single VMXNET 2 NIC. It requires
creating new install ISO files. So far I have created the discs for
server 5.3 x86 and x86_64. I am working on the client CDs now. Then I will
work on modified RHEL 4.8 install CDs next week. Right now these CDs are
in a folder called "test" on the ESX servers. When I am finished I will
place these ISOs in a AFS locker for other groups on campus to be able
to use these for installs.
I created some documentation on making new RHEL boot.iso CDs with
vmxnet 2 NIC drivers added to the install media at:
http://techies.ncsu.edu/wiki/Realm_Linux_install_with_VMXNET_driver_support
I worked on several remedy calls.
I worked on trying to figure out a new way to package openoffice. I am
trying to get it to install in the build section rather than the %post section.
I began giving some thought to how we can build the VMware tools when we
don't have AFS on first boot with VMXNET 2 drivers. I think I will make
a service to rebuild the modules with the VMware provided VMware Tools
rpm. It will have to work like dkms from DELL does.
